Jim Morrison (The Doors)
His father was Rear Admiral George Stephen Morrison.
The Admiral was the commanding officer of the U.S. fleet during the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident, an event that served as the primary justification for the escalation of the Vietnam War.

Frank Zappa

His father, Francis Zappa, was a chemical warfare specialist who worked at the Edgewood Arsenal.
Edgewood Arsenal was the primary facility for the U.S. Army’s secret testing of chemical, biological, and psycho-pharmaceutical weapons on human subjects. This is the same facility the nazis and Unit 731 killers worked at.

John Phillips (The Mamas and the Papas)
His father was a career U.S. Marine officer. Phillips was noted by McGowan for his ease of movement in elite, high-security circles and his role in “anchoring” the Laurel Canyon sound.

Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield / Crosby, Stills & Nash)
His father was an officer in the U.S. military. Stills spent significant time in Latin American countries where U.S. intelligence was actively involved in destabilizing governments just prior to his emergence in the music scene.

David Crosby (The Byrds / Crosby, Stills & Nash)
Son of a wealthy, elite “blue blood” family with deep historical ties to American power structures (descended from John Jay and Alexander Hamilton). He functioned as a central connector within the Canyon, bridging aristocratic lineage with the counterculture.

Gram Parsons (The Byrds / The Flying Burrito Brothers)
Born into the wealthy Snively family (citrus magnates); his stepfather was Robert Parsons, who was involved in unconventional military/intelligence operations. McGowan notes that Parsons’ family background provided him with the resources and the “freedom” to drift through clandestine-adjacent environments.

Peter Tork (The Monkees)
Background: His father was a high-ranking officer in the U.S. Army. Like Stills, Tork’s presence in the scene is viewed by McGowan as indicative of the military-industrial complex’s interest in controlling the “pop” imagery of the era.

Joni Mitchell
Background: Her father, Bill Anderson, served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. McGowan places her within the “Canyon” orbit as a narrative-builder who helped romanticize the geography and ethos that the intelligence community wanted to promote to the youth.

Chris Hillman (The Byrds / The Flying Burrito Brothers)
Background: Involved in the same circle as the other former military offspring in the Byrds. Hillman’s background and connections mirror the pattern of young men from high-security families congregating in one specific Los Angeles neighborhood to launch the counterculture movement under the shadow of the Lookout Mountain Laboratory—a covert Air Force film studio located, quite literally, inside Laurel Canyon.

Al Sharpton and other activists are telling Black Americans and Black-owned businesses to boycott America’s 250th birthday.

My response: You do not speak for me.

You do not get to use my skin color to tell me what I can celebrate. I was not a slave. You were not a slave. We are free Americans, and I refuse to walk around pretending we are still in chains.

Yes, I proudly put George Washington on my America 250 Cousin T’s pancake box. He owned slaves, but that is not his entire legacy. He was also our first president and helped build the nation that gave people like me the freedom to rise.

I went from foster care to building Cousin T’s, a successful Black-owned American company. I am living the American Dream.

So while Al Sharpton is calling for a boycott, I am calling for Black Americans to stop letting professional outrage merchants convince us that patriotism belongs only to white people.

America is my country too.

I will celebrate her loudly, proudly, and without permission.
