Fighter ace Neel Kearby received the Medal of Honor for his actions #OnThisDay in 1943. In the skies above New Guinea, Kearby and three fellow pilots attacked an enemy force of more than 40 planes, destroying many and driving them away from American forces.

During WWII, GySgt Basilone received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942, and was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945.
