Every book burning in history was performed in public. The Inquisition wanted witnesses. The Nazis wanted photographs. The one happening right now shreds up to a million books per order and comes with a nondisclosure agreement, because the people running it understand exactly how it looks.

ISBNdb, a database company that spent years helping libraries and booksellers find books, now brokers anonymous bulk purchases for AI labs. Its own website admits that "AI company destroys two million books" is a headline nobody wants, then offers a strict NDA on every engagement and coaches buyers to describe the shredding as digital preservation. A rare book dealer in Haarlem received an order for nearly 3,000 titles. Sellers across Germany, Switzerland, and Spain report the same overnight bulk buys. Books with almost no surviving copies are going into the spine-cutters.

And the law is holding the door open. Judge Alsup ruled in Bartz v. Anthropic that buying a book, slicing off its spine, and destroying it after scanning is transformative fair use. The pirated half of the same case cost $1.5 billion in settlement, roughly $3,000 per book. So the market learned the lesson instantly. Piracy costs $3,000 a copy. Destruction costs nothing.

Google scanned 25 million library books, returned every single one, and spent 11 years in court defending it. The shredder approach cleared court in ten months. Guess which method the industry chose.

When your business model needs an NDA to survive contact with the public, you already know what the business is. The book burners of history at least stood next to the fire.
