@D__Melb @TedNeath Agreed. Southgate struggled to find the balance. We scored loads in 2022 but got caught out by a France team who were on the ropes, and then were turgid and cautious in 2024. But still got to the final. We lionise Italia 90 and we only reached a semi, while also playing horribly.

@D__Melb @TedNeath 2022 was easy, but 2021 was awkward and we ended up top with 9 points. And historically, England have struggled to win the group - 1998 second to Romania, 2010
second to USA. Southgate deserves credit for getting that part right, imo.

@D__Melb @TedNeath But we got those kind draws from winning the groups - with the exception of 2018 where we came second to a very strong Belgium and rested everyone in the final game to take the pathway that had opened up a bit. Sven’s England came second to Sweden in 2002 and France in 2004.

The England national team is made up of English nationals, and nationality is a complex mix of birthplace, upbringing and parenthood.
