A lot of people are asking me to weigh in on the Trump/Elon feud, saying my opinion will be steadying and calming. I appreciate the compliment, so I'm obliging hoping it's true.
First, stop being reactive. Calm down and wait. Emotions are high. Wait. Let things play out.
My primary advice is not to lose your head while this plays out. Watch and wait, mostly. Pay attention, not just to what is unfolding but to who is pushing you to side with whom, and why that might be.
Surely, there are points where people are right. Likely both are making right points, but in the heat of this moment, that's more confusing to the matter, not less. Most of us do not have any important decisions to make over this issue and will not have any in the near future. Take time and gather more information, let tempers cool, let facts come out. Settle down.
I don't advise complacency but humility and temperance. The people rushing to have something to say about it don't know much more than you do in most cases, and they very likely don't have your interests in mind at all. They have clicks to get. They have agendas to push. They have operations to satisfy. They have audiences to play to. They have loyalties to attend to. Most of this has nothing to do with you and not only will not help you but also cannot help you.
You're in a privileged position of not having to make hasty decisions or chase clicks or maintain an audience, at least for most of you. You can exercise wisdom here and refuse to participate in the reflexive campaigns that influencers thrive on. The professionals can do their jobs and should. Influencers are not professionals. They're carnival barkers and propagandists, almost to a person. Do not look to them. Use your own eyes and your own wits, and take your time with it. You don't have to rush.
I advise you not to trust anyone telling you to rush, especially to take a hardline side. They have agendas that are either more or less wholesome, hence their haste, but the dishonest among them know that "chaos is a ladder." They will take advantage of the chaos and reactivity to push unwholesome agendas. You don't need to be caught up in that. It benefits no one but the bad actors. Everyone presenting something based in wisdom will not tell you to rush to make snap decisions. It is completely unwise to chase clout in these moments, so refrain from that too.
Pay attention to different influencers and how they act. Are their tweets thoughtful? Funny? Perceptive? Canned, like they came from a script? And are they agitating, as in agitprop? Watch out for those last two types. They're not in your best interest, especially if you agree with them.
So that's my advice. I was invited to half a dozen spaces tonight to lend my voice and "talk raw" about the unfolding news. In every case, I replied that I don't "talk raw" about unfolding news.
I encourage you to do the same.
