June is Scoliosis Awareness Month it is an important opportunity to raise awareness about the natural progression of scoliosis and the importance of timely intervention.

One of the most critical phases in scoliosis progression occurs during the pre-pubertal growth spurt or peak growth velocity. This rapid deterioration is well documented in the literature, yet it can still come as a shock to families when curves worsen dramatically over a relatively short period of time.

In some situations, early surgical intervention may help prevent severe progression and reduce the extent and invasiveness of future surgery. However, decisions around surgery are never easy for families, and understandably many parents hope to delay intervention for as long as possible.

Unfortunately, when rapid progression occurs during peak growth, surgery can become significantly more complex,often requiring longer fusion levels, more invasive procedures, and technically more demanding correction.

Scoliosis is not simply “poor posture” or a cosmetic issue. In progressive cases, timing matters.

This Scoliosis Awareness Month, I hope we can continue improving awareness around:
• Early detection
• Regular monitoring during growth spurts
• Understanding progression risk
• Timely specialist assessment and intervention when appropriate

The goal is always to achieve the safest treatment with the best long-term outcome for the child.
