I've always viewed it as umbrella terms New York State > Upstate > Western New York > Buffalo. Am I off base here? I seem to only see this sentiment online

I've lived in New York most of my life but never anywhere near New York City. I've always referred to the places I've lived broadly as "upstate" - Bainbridge, Rochester, Cortland, Utica

What I've never been able to understand is people who get so angry when those regions of the state are referred to as "upstate." The whole "It's Western New York NOT upstate" crowd. I've seen the same in Central New York
