Elon Musk: With godlike powers, I could cut the federal budget in half โ and get more done.
โI think the DOGE team's done a lot of good work in terms of fraud and waste prevented my guess is it's probably on the order of $200 or $300 billion a year. So it's pretty good.โ
Joe Rogan: โWhat do you think could have been done if you just had like, full reign and total cooperation?โ
Elon: โProbably cut the federal budget in half and get more done.โ

Elon Musk: Since I bought Twitter, no left-wing voice has been banned or suppressed.
โI just bought Twitter because I thought it was having a negative effect on civilization and pushed ideas that were anti-civilizational. It was captured by the far-leftโI'd say it's fair to say the radical left. That meant it wasn't a good forum for debate because they suspended many people on the right, including the president, as you may recall, a sitting president, which is really unprecedented.
I think we need to have a public square where there's true freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is the bedrock of democracy. If there's not freedom of speech, people cannot make an informed vote. And if you can't make an informed vote, you don't have a real democracy.
The purpose of acquiring Twitter was to try to bring it more to the center. No left-wing voices have been banned or anything like that or suppressed. But what we're trying to do is give equal weight to all parts of the country so that they can be a public town square where people can exchange ideas and hopefully not resort to violence.
Free speech is the bedrock of democracy. It's why it's the First Amendment, because people came from countries where they could be killed or imprisoned for what they said. And in fact, this is happening all around the world as we speak, even in places like Britain. Anyway, I did it because I felt like the civilizational risk had to be addressed. If America is not strong, then what do businesses matter? America is the central pillar that holds up Western civilization, and if that pillar falls, everything falls.โ

Elon Musk: Reality is the ultimate judge.
โYou have to test any conclusions against the ground truth of reality. Reality is the ultimate judge. Physics is the law, everything else is a recommendation. I've seen plenty of people break the laws made by man, but none break the laws made by physics.โ

Elon Musk: Being aware of inequities in society is fine, but trying to make everything a race issue is divisive and corrosive to society. We should not make this a constant subject. We need to move on and treat people like people.
Elon Musk on AI taking over: โWhat are we all going to do?โ
โAI will do anything you want and even suggest things you never even thought of. Within the next few years, AI will be able to do any cognitive task. It obviously begs the question: What are we all going to do? But pretty much any cognitive task that doesn't involve atoms, AI will be able to do within, I'd say three or four years maximum.โ

Elon Musk: If a comet hits Earth, it's game over. We have to become multiplanetary.
โEarth does not currently have any ability to stop asteroids. With Starship, we then have some ability to stop an asteroid. Actually, technically a comet would be the real danger because there are billions, if not more than billions, maybe trillions of objects that are in the outer solar system. Some of them that are very long period comets. An example that most people are probably aware of is Halley's Comet.
So, there are probably many objects, many comets that have very long periods that we simply don't know exist. And for example, the comet Shoemaker Levy, when that hit Jupiter, it made a hole in Jupiter the size of Earth. If that did hit Earth, it's game over. Everything's dead. So anyways, there's always some risk of such a thing occurring and the probable lifespan of life is just much greater if we're a multiplanet and ultimately multistellar civilization.โ

Elon Musk: Here are my controversial far-right views.
โWe want safe cities, secure borders, sensible spending โ tell me where I'm going far-right here. We want to have the right to self-protection. We should respect the Constitution and not try to break the Constitution. It's there for a reason. We should stop lawfare.
And right to free speech, you know, the First Amendment. If we don't have free speech, we don't have democracy, because people cannot make an informed vote. Those are my controversial views.โ

Elon Musk: It's a red flag if someone's a cynic. If somebody sees bad behavior in everyone, it's easy for them to excuse their own bad behavior by saying, well, everyone does it.
Elon Musk seven years ago on Tesla's lead in self-driving tech:
โTo me right now, this seems game, set, match. I don't want to be complacent or overconfident, but that's literally how it appears right now. I could be wrong, but it appears that Tesla is vastly ahead of everyone.โ

Elon Musk on Starbase: We needed something inspirational.
โWe have a lot of Star-things. We've got Starlink, Starship. Where would Starship depart from? Starbase. I think it's probably the coolest place on Earth. It used to be a sandbar down by the Rio Grande. It's only 3 ft above sea level. So we built a gigantic rocket factory and two giant launch towers, literally within sight of the Rio Grande and on an actual sandbar. It had to have an inspirational name. And then we made it a city.โ
Interview with Katie Miller, December 10, 2025
Elon Musk: I think we'll achieve full Starship reusability in 2026.
โWe're pretty close to being able to rapidly reuse the booster for Starship. It comes back and gets caught by the arms, and then the arms place it back in the launch mount. Now, we have a little bit of engine damage, and we got a little bit of heat shield damage. There are like tweaks that are needed. But we're pretty close to achieving full and rapid reusability of the booster.
I think we'll achieve reusability of the ship this year, and I think we'll achieve rapid reusability of the whole stack ship and booster next year. This is the fundamental breakthrough required for life to become multiplanetary.โ

Elon Musk on learning physics: What matters are not the formulas, but the thinking process that led to the discovery of those formulas.
โI just recommend studying physics. What matters is not remembering a bunch of formulas. What matters is the thinking process that led to the discovery of those formulas. It's sort of critical thinking, first principles analysis, trying to understand what is true at a most fundamental level and then reasoning up from there and testing your conclusions against the most fundamental truths in any given arena. This is how you can figure out whether something is more likely to be true or not. It's good to think in terms of probabilities.
If you receive information about a subject, that should change the probability of your conclusion, but not the certainty of your conclusion. Physics teaches you that you should not be 100% certain about any given prediction. Now, there's some things that are highly likely, but physics teaches you you got to assign a probability to something being true. And then as you learn more information, your original conclusion may be wrong, then you should then change your mind based on the new information.โ
