In Japan, long-distance travel generally relies on toll expressways. Tesla has no Superchargers (charging facilities for Tesla vehicles) in any of the rest areas on these toll expressways.
Today, the expressway operator that manages western Japan opened a public call for rapid-charger installations, but the requirements effectively limit eligibility to only one company—e-Mobility Power—excluding all others. (Japan’s Fair Trade Commission has also viewed this exclusivity as problematic for several years, but the expressway operator has ignored it.)
One of the reasons Tesla sales struggle in Japan is that drivers cannot charge on expressways. Both the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) and Japan’s Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) have expressed concerns about the charging environment.
