Marvel rejected Robert Downey Jr. for Doctor Doom in 2004. Twenty-two years later they're paying him $100 million to play Doctor Doom.

And the failed audition is the reason the MCU exists.

In 2004 he was uninsurable. Multiple arrests, a career stuck in mid-budget purgatory, studios refusing to bond him. He read for Doom in the Fantastic Four movie anyway. Kevin Feige, an executive producer on that film, passed. The part went to Julian McMahon.

Two years later Jon Favreau was screen testing actors for Iron Man. Favreau has said the only reason everybody at Marvel knew who Downey was, and paid attention when his name came up, was that Doom meeting. The hungriest actor in the failed audition became the first casting decision of the MCU.

He made roughly $500K for the first Iron Man. Then $500 to $600 million across the Infinity Saga, the most any actor has earned from a single franchise. He retired the character in 2019 at the exact peak.

Marvel spent the next six years learning what the franchise was worth without him. So they went back to the actor they once passed on for free, and this time the price was $100 million plus bonuses, a private jet, a security team, and a full trailer encampment, for the villain role he wanted first.

The audition he lost created the franchise that just paid nine figures for the audition he won.

Su carrera como DT la dedicó a la selección española en todas sus categorías. Ganó la Euro Sub 19, la Euro Sub 21 y la medalla de plata en Tokio con ls Sub 23. Luego pasó a la mayor ganando la Eurocopa 2024 y hoy, el Mundial.
