Reporting with @michigandaily on a student strike happening on the Diag today. Students are walking out of class to push for accountability and transparency from @UMich on climate and sexual misconduct policies. Follow along for updates!
Students at the @fordschool are protesting the admission of a master's student found guilty of Title IX violations related to sexual assault at his undergraduate university.
The protest comes amid intense focus on the issue of sexual misconduct on campus. https://t.co/jVSAUqhlPn
Last night, @umcsg passed a resolution criticizing the University’s response to Dr. Robert Anderson’s sexual abuse and calling for @DrMarkSchlissel's immediate termination.

The current MI law surrounding criminal sexual conduct has language in the "mentally incapacitated" section that says the definition is met if the incapacitating substance was administered w/o consent.
This bill would scratch that part so it doesn't matter; you can seek charges.
If passed, this legislation will enable thousands of victims across Michigan, particularly college students, to pursue criminal charges against their perpetrators thanks to this less-restrictive definition of mental incapacitation.
As we enter Black History month, we need to remember that while we’ve progressed as a society there is still much work to be do to help those disproportionately affected by sexual abuse and assault. Come to our meeting at 6 PM to take action on these issues. DM with uniqname.
Mass meeting: February 1st! Roe V. Rape advocates for laws, policies, and practices that treat survivors with the respect they deserve. We work to prevent sexual violence through education and provide resources for survivors and allies. Check out link in bio for more information!
The Department of Education should be doing everything in its power to decrease the prevalence of sexual violence at schools and help victims seek justice, not roll back important protections.

Today Secretary DeVos’s Title IX regulations go in effect. These regulations are a major step backwards for victims. This rule adds unnecessary hurdles to the investigative process and makes seeking justice much more traumatic for survivors.
U of M’s new Policy is a huge improvement, but there is still more work that needs to be done. Join us in our fight by emailing [email protected].

The University will also continue to investigate off-campus sexual misconduct and conduct that no longer falls under Title IX due to the Department of Education’s new regulations
Under U of M’s new sexual misconduct policy, “the university will provide advisers to conduct cross-examination for those students who need them. Advisers appointed in student hearings will be outside attorneys provided by the university.” This is a huge win!
If @UMich had taken action the 1st time someone spoke up about Philbert's sexual harassment, they would have prevented 15 years of harassment.
“Having a system... that doesn’t take quick action when it receives allegations is ultimately hurting itself.”

A majority of students raped, assaulted, or abused in college will experience significant drops in their grade point average. And survivors are more likely to drop out of school.
Schools (& Betsy) should be doing everything in their power to stop sexual violence, not ignore it.
#BREAKING: 18 states have filed a lawsuit against Betsy DeVos and the Department of Education for their Title IX rule.
Thank you for standing up for the rights of student survivors' and demanding that the Trump administration and their anti-survivor agenda keep their #HandsOffIX
