I had dinner recently with a lawyer who had been involved in one of Trump’s four Atlantic City bankruptcies. A creditors’ meeting was held at the defunct casino, and at the entrance was a table piled high with free copies of “The Art of the Deal.”

We’re approaching the 50th anniversary of the Asilomar Conference on Recombinant DNA—the first attempt by scientists to self-regulate hazardous research. Next week I’ll be speaking at Rice University for “Brave New World: Who Decides? Research, Risks and Responsibility”, a conference exploring whether the example of Asilomar is relevant to the new risks of synthetic biology, AI and geoengineering.
