A man stabbed repeatedly by a Sudanese asylum seeker lost an eye during the knife attack in Belfast, a court has heard.

Stephen Ogilvie, in his 40s, lost his left eye and suffered severe damage to the right eye, deep cuts to his face and lacerations to his back, according to Stephen Keown, the district judge.

A Sudanese asylum seeker charged over the Belfast knife attack has been named for the first time.

Hadi Alodid, 30, has been remanded in custody at Laganside magistrates’ court after being charged with the attempted murder of Stephen Ogilvie, who lost his left eye during Monday’s stabbing.

Police in Northern Ireland say they have arrested a Sudanese man in his 30s for a brutal stabbing attack in Belfast late Monday night. Graphic video of the incident shows a man straddling another man lying in a street and slashing him several times in the head and neck with a knife. Eventually, a group of bystanders intervenes, hitting the attacker with a stick until police arrive.

The victim survived and is in the hospital with severe injuries, authorities say.

He entered Britain in February 2023, immediately claiming asylum, according to the police.

Who was the immigration minister at the time? And then when the man was granted leave to remain in our country?

Man: “Currently I’m being arrested for expressing freedom of speech.”

Officer: “This gentleman has committed an offence by displaying a sign or writing that is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.”

Man: “Cuffing me for what? Freedom of expression, freedom of speech, inciting nothing. I have calm, rational debates with people. I was not disrespectful. I love people. I am a Christian.”

The man is then loaded into the back of a police van and taken away, all for wearing a sign that someone might find offensive.
