NELFUND spends N16bn monthly on students' upkeep, says Akintunde Sawyerr

Akintunde Sawyerr, managing director of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), says the agency spends about N16 billion monthly on student upkeep.

Speaking on the sustainability of the student loan scheme on Monday, Sawyerr said that NELFUND had received about 1.8 million applications, processed about 1.5 million, and provided value to about 850,000 beneficiaries.

President Tinubu welcomes reports of growth in GDP, assures of stronger microeconomic performance

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu welcomed the encouraging news on Monday from the National Bureau of Statistics, which shows that Gross Domestic Product for the second quarter of 2026 grew by 4.43 per cent, up from 4.23 per cent in the second quarter of 2025.

The report also shows growth in agriculture, manufacturing, the oil and gas sector, and the service sector, which now dominates the economy in terms of contribution to aggregate GDP.

In nominal terms, the country’s aggregate GDP in the second quarter stood at N119.27 trillion, up by 18.43 per cent from N100.7 trillion recorded at the same time last year.

President Tinubu said the report could not have come at a better time, as the opposition has been trying to diminish his administration's efforts since May 2023 and even promising to reverse the policies if, perchance, Nigerians voted for them.

“In the past three years, we tried to do the hard part by implementing the necessary reforms to stabilise the economy. Now the economy is stabilised, and we have laid the foundation for a prosperous nation. We didn’t do the reforms to create challenges, but to ensure prosperity reaches all our people.

“The results of the efforts are becoming very clear to all: The Renewed Hope Agenda is working. Because of those tough decisions, today Nigeria has trade surpluses. Our foreign reserves are at their highest in 17 years. Our credit rating has moved up several notches. We are building roads, railways and superhighways that will last for a long time. Investors who left are returning. Oil and gas production is increasing. And in our universities - for the first time in a long time - there are no strikes. Our children are in class. And through NELFUND, student loans are putting education within reach, and affordable credit is going to our civil servants through Creditcorp.

“In the next few weeks, we are addressing some of the challenges being faced by our vulnerable population by providing cheaper means of transport, ramping up food production and implementing various relief programmes that will touch lives at the grassroots”.

“Under our watch, the economy is on the irreversible path to experience even more growth that all homes will feel at the dining table and in their pockets. We are not resting on our oars. We are fully committed to translating consistent, stronger economic performance into better microeconomic outcomes for our citizens. We must stay vigilant by ensuring the sustainable progress we are recording remains irreversible”, President Tinubu stated.

Agriculture 4.39%. Services 4.60%. Non-oil is doing the work many swore would never show up in the numbers.

FBI has no criminal record on Tinubu - Reno Omokri

Ambassador-designate Reno Omokri has dismissed reports that the FBI released criminal records on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the claims as false. He said FBI records on individuals do not necessarily indicate criminal activity, adding that a 2003 US Embassy response to an inquiry by then-IGP Tafa Balogun confirmed there were no criminal records involving Tinubu.

I am delighted to receive the news that the fifteen members of the National Youth Service Corps and six other innocent and law-abiding Nigerians abducted last week in Kogi State by some criminal elements have regained their freedom.

The well-coordinated Search and Rescue (SAR) operation carried out by a combined team of personnel of the military, the Nigerian Police Force, the Department of State Services, and local vigilantes safely rescued all twenty-one abductees, made up of eight males and thirteen females, from the den of kidnappers in the forests of Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State this afternoon. The corps members and other rescued individuals are currently receiving medical attention before they are reunited with their families.

While the abductees have been safely rescued, our gallant security forces are still on the trail of the routed kidnappers, in line with my directive to sustain the pressure on all criminal elements. Those responsible will face the full weight of the law, and our security agencies will pursue everyone who aided this crime. My administration remains committed to ensuring that every Nigerian can travel across our country without fear.

I wholeheartedly commend the combined SAR team for their courage and appreciate families and loved ones of the abductees for their understanding during the ordeals of their loved ones.

As I share in the relief and joy of the parents and loved ones of the rescued individuals, I want to once again, assure parents and loved ones of our dedicated corps members that my Administration remains committed to ensuring the safety of their lives and property, as well as those of other Nigerians.

God bless the men and women of our Security and Intelligence agencies.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
