Todo comenzó cuando era apenas un niño y quedó enamorado de la magia de Ronaldinho. Verlo jugar cambió su forma de entender el fútbol y despertó un sueño: viajar a Brasil para aprender ese estilo libre y alegre que tanto lo fascinaba.

A los 8 años quiso unirse a una gira infantil por Brasil, pero no cumplía con la edad mínima y quedó fuera. Rompió en llanto. Entonces, su padre le hizo una promesa que marcaría su vida: “No te preocupes, yo mismo te llevaré”.

Y cumplió.

Durante unas vacaciones familiares en Río de Janeiro, Keito pasó semanas jugando descalzo en las calles y en la arena de Copacabana junto a niños brasileños. Allí aprendió el regate, la improvisación y esa creatividad que hoy sigue siendo una de sus principales virtudes.

Con el paso de los años, combinó esa esencia brasileña con la disciplina del fútbol japonés. El resultado fue un futbolista diferente, capaz de brillar en Europa y convertirse en una de las figuras de Japón.

Ahora, el destino le regala una historia perfecta: aquel niño que lloró por no poder viajar a Brasil hoy saltará al campo para enfrentarse a la selección brasileña en una Copa del Mundo.

I cannot believe Cape Verde actually convinced this guy to play for them via LinkedIn😭. Monster of a defender.

His mother is Irish, his father is from Cape Verde. He was born and raised in Ireland, and currently the captain of Shamrock Rovers.

He represented Ireland at youth level before switching to Cape Verde.

In 2018, Cape Verde were looking for professional footballers with Cape Verdian heritage and the coach came across Pico Lopes.

He messaged him on LinkedIn to play for them, Lopes was working part time as a Mortgage advisor in a bank then and still playing professional football.

He didn’t respond because the message was in Portuguese and he didn’t understand, he thought it was a spam.

A year later (2019), the coach messaged him again, this time he did it in English. Lopes agreed to play for Cape Verde and the rest is history.

Watching Japan play in this World Cup and even in earlier ones, brings home the fact that if they can succeed in this game at a global level, so can India.

It IS, however, a long term project.

伊東純也は、今では日本代表に欠かせない存在として知られている。しかし、そのキャリアは決してエリート街道ではなかった。

神奈川県の公立校である逗葉高校時代、伊東は全国的に注目される選手ではなかった。強豪クラブの下部組織出身でもなく、世代別日本代表にも選ばれていない。多くの有望選手が若い頃から脚光を浴びる中、伊東は無名に近い存在だったのである。

高校卒業後は神奈川大学へ進学した。大学時代の伊東は抜群のスピードを持ちながらも、普段はどこかマイペースな性格で知られていた。天然な一面もあり、チームメイトや先輩たちから愛される存在だった。しかし一方で負けず嫌いな性格でもあった。ある試合では相手ディフェンダーに完全に封じられ、試合後に悔し涙を流したこともあったという。

その悔しさを糧に、伊東は努力を重ねた。ただ足が速いだけではプロでは通用しないと考え、ドリブルやパス、状況判断などあらゆる技術を磨き続けたのである。その姿勢が徐々に評価され、大学卒業後にヴァンフォーレ甲府へ加入。さらに柏レイソルで頭角を現し、日本屈指のウイングへと成長していった。

伊東はその後、ベルギーのゲンクへ移籍し、海外でも活躍を見せる。持ち味である圧倒的なスピードは欧州でも十分に通用し、多くのディフェンダーを置き去りにした。また、そのタフさも有名である。骨折していたにもかかわらずプレーを続け、後になって骨折していたことが判明したというエピソードは、伊東の強靭な精神力を象徴している。

そして日本代表でも大きな存在となった。特に2022年ワールドカップアジア最終予選では苦しい状況のチームを何度も救い、4試合連続ゴールを記録。日本のワールドカップ出場に大きく貢献したのである。

かつて無名だった公立高校の少年は、大学で努力を重ね、プロ入り後も成長を続けた。そして今では欧州で活躍し、日本代表を支えるエース級の存在となっている。伊東純也の物語は、才能だけでなく努力と向上心によって頂点へたどり着いた、まさにサクセスストーリーなのである。
