The Article 370 judgement upholding the effective abrogation of J and K’s special status is on expected lines and makes an important point on ‘asymmetric federalism’. ‘J&K did not retain any sovereignty after accession to India' is the top takeaway. BUT the court judgement makes two key observations that deserve more attention: 1) need to restore statehood as soon as possible and elections by Sept 30. Why was statehood taken away in the first instance and why elections have not been held yet is a mystery that GOI/EC have not answered yet2) Justice Kaul calls for setting up a truth and reconciliation commission: will any govt take this bold but necessary step that can truly provide a healing touch?
