We’re not ones for hyperbole here at The Athletic, nor do we like to make sweeping conclusions after just one weekend of the 2026-27 season.

That said, we can confidently say that Arsenal are going to win the title by about a billion points.

Mikel Arteta’s side have been pretty clear favourites to retain their title since well before the opening games.

But with the significant caveat that we have only seen 90 minutes, the reasons for their status as favourites were emphasised this weekend — perhaps less by how they played, and more by the inconsistencies of their challengers.

Is anyone going to challenge Arsenal in any serious way? Not on the evidence of this weekend.

PL teams who don't have Big 6 budgets end up recruiting much smarter. And the gap between coaching is almost non existent because of the data, tactics and information available. Every team now has incredible physical athletes. Big 6 spending doesn't guarantee anything

Bounrmouth, Brentford, Brighton will probably be the best of the rest this season. Palace, Everton and Hull will bring the low and mid blocks and be hard to breakdown. Sunderland and Newcastle will be aggressive and their home grounds will be hard to play at. Difficult league

Will continue to reiterate that the Premier League will keep getting harder. It is the super league. Its comparative strength to all other leagues is ridiculous.

And it’s driven by the financials. Transfer fees alone, this summer, Premier League spending is 163% more than 2nd ranked (in expenditure) Serie A.

The Prem was at its strongest last season. And this will be superseded by the current one.

The Community shield is nothing to go by, but Maresca so far hasn't shown enough adaptability in his tactics. I don't expect him to last the season, and I expect Kompany to be lined up for the job next

We don't realize how hard it is going to be without his production. Tzolis is promising but let's not equate him to a younger trossard. The ability to twist and turn defenders around with Cruyff turns, feints and finding runners im tight spaces is still unbelievable.

Brighton & Hove Albion have rejected a £50million bid from Liverpool for winger Yankuba Minteh.

The 22-year-old is currently recovering from surgery on a right leg injury sustained in a 3-0 friendly win at home to Roma earlier this month.

Minteh is expected to be out of action for another eight weeks, but sources with knowledge of the matter say he is keen on the potential move if the clubs can agree a fee.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Football needs to reevaluate its rules on finances. Teams being forced to sell their best players damages everything that is good about the competition. It’s killing the hopes, dreams and ambition of every club except the elite.

When Odegaard is on song, there's not a lot many players who are more aesthetically pleasing to watch. Bruno G could unlock him more because he'll find him earlier in the pockets with more space and time than usual

Artera has never had a better chance to ease Saka, Rice, Zubimendi and Gabriel over the next month using minutes restrictions so they get the proper recovery while improving match fitness.
