Maybe one day you’ll realise how hard it was for me from my perspective. Maybe one day you’ll understand that there was more going on beneath the surface than what you could see. Some of my silence was pain. Some of my distance was exhaustion. Some of my mistakes came from trying to survive things I didn’t know how to talk about. I know I didn’t always handle things perfectly, but I was carrying things I didn’t always have the words for. I never wanted sympathy. I just wanted understanding. Maybe one day, you’ll see my side of the story too and realise I was never trying to make things harder. I was just trying to survive things you couldn’t see.
loving someone will challenge you. it will ask you to communicate when shutting down would be easier, listen when you’d rather defend yourself, apologize when your pride wants to win, and show up on days when you don’t feel particularly loving. real love doesn’t just give you someone to share life with. it gives you opportunities to become more patient, honest, emotionally aware, and willing to grow.
You'll fall deeper in love when you realize that your lover doesn't exist to satisfy your every whim and desire and it's not their responsibility to provide everything lacking in your life, like some kind of divinely ordained human-shaped vending machine. When you let go of this, and just focus on loving them, that's the secret doorway to getting everything you ever wanted.
The ones who find true love have the dual abilities of meeting their partners where they are and helping them become who they’re meant to be. They know it’s not always going to be easy, but they persist through it all. They love genuinely, and in return receive genuine love.
“To be loved is to be considered.”
Everyone says this phrase, but the older I get, the more I realise how true it actually is. Love isn’t just saying “I love you.” It’s thinking about how your actions will affect someone before you make them. It’s remembering what makes them uncomfortable. Knowing what matters to them. Checking in because you know they’ve had a difficult day. Thinking about their feelings when making decisions. Remembering the little things they told you months ago because you were actually listening. It’s asking “how will this make them feel?” before doing something that could hurt them. And sometimes, consideration looks incredibly ordinary. Saving them the last piece because you know they love it. Letting them know you’ll be late instead of leaving them wondering. Making space for their needs instead of expecting them to constantly accommodate yours. Because when you genuinely love someone, they naturally become part of the way you move through the world. To be loved is to be considered. To be remembered. To be thought about even when you’re not there. And honestly, sometimes the smallest acts of consideration are the clearest proof that someone truly cares.
i used to think love was mostly about how strongly you felt for someone. the older i get, the more i realize that loving someone well is a skill. it requires awareness, intention, accountability, and the willingness to look at yourself honestly. sometimes you have to put your ego aside, take responsibility for the energy you bring into the relationship, and choose your actions carefully. healthy love doesn’t build itself. the relationship becomes as healthy as the two people inside it are willing to make it.
Whatever you do, pray for the ability to see your own sins, your own hypocrisy, and your own shortcomings. Never lose sight of that, never get so carried away pointing fingers that you forget you, too, have abscesses that need tending.
“The romantic fantasy for a lot of men isn't a relationship constantly being tested from within. It's a relationship strong enough to withstand everything testing it from outside.”
