Human rights defenders are the torchbearers of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted 76 years ago. Their work ensures that these rights are not just words, but lived realities. On #HumanRightsDay, let’s recommit to protecting those who breathe life into the #UDHR.
On 10 Dec, @UN#HumanRightsDay2024, in a short video (3.47) @HelenaKennedyKC talks about the state of human rights today and thanks #legal professionals who promote and protect them and the independence of the #legalprofession worldwide.

If implemented, the laws adopted today by the Knesset of Israel would likely prevent @UNRWA from continuing its essential work in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, with devastating consequences for Palestine refugees.
I call on Israel to act consistently with its obligations under the Charter of the @UN & international law. National legislation cannot alter those obligations.
I am bringing this matter to the attention of the UN General Assembly, and will keep the Assembly closely informed as the situation develops.
There is no alternative to UNRWA.

I was delighted to represent @FacultyScot at this. The formal wig is not, perhaps, may favourite look; but the Opening of the Legal Year is a great event and involves catching up with great friends from the profession, domestically and from as far afield as Aus and the Bahamas. Thanks for the hospitality, @thebarcouncil.
