I've been digging into travel AI fulfillment and payments lately.
PYMNTS CEO Karen Webster runs some of the deepest interviews in the payments space. In a recent PYMNTS TV Monday Conversation, Booking SVP Daniel Marovitz explains why AI can plan your Rome trip in seconds but can't finish the booking.

A single travel transaction crosses currencies, borders, local payment methods, supplier onboarding, fraud screening, sanctions checks, refunds, and months of customer service obligations.
His verdict on whether this is Booking's moat? "100%."

I agree — big companies' moat is payment fulfillment. Google, small AI teams and developers are great at planning but mostly can't close the loop. All internet AI companies seem to be weak on payments compared to traditional OTAs.

But this gap is closing. MCP and API are handing the full transaction and payment chain. Can AI companies + MCP providers achieve 1+1 ＞2 comparing to traditional OTAs？ They combines strengths.

Of course, traditional OTAs have built hard-to-replicate capabilities in payment, after-sales over years. But users don't demand perfection in one area. They want balance across the whole journey.

MCP is rebuilding its authorization around agents instead of people in browsers
The Model Context Protocol published a new roadmap on August 22 that names its authorization model as a core problem:

Agent identity & delegated auth (PoP tokens, Workload Identity Federation, ID-JAG, standard token exchange), server-initiated events (webhook/channels), HTTP transport unification, progressive tool discovery, and SDK consistency. The blunt message: "paste an API key and you're good" is going away — because in production, the callers are cloud workloads and self-replicating sub-agents, not humans sitting there clicking "approve." The authorization model that assumes a human in the loop is broken.

174 upvotes on HN with sharp pushback in the comments — migration friction is real, old-version bugs keep popping up, and the scope of change feels too big. The direction is right. Doing it right is hard.
