Flashback to February 1960 with the Original Girl Dad - Curt Savage, who’d eventually overcome ‘women in the pits are bad luck’ with his only child - by the 1970’s.

Altho my ‘driving career was over’ at age 14 (1973) - Dad had Plan B: in 1971 a woman had to sue the Indy Motor Speedway (IMS) for the right for women to do Press (before Media was a ‘thing’) & to work from the Pagoda (original Media Center).

In 1975, he did it - falsified my Birth Year (3 times total) in the Registrars Office at IMS… unbeknownst to me of course, I was barely 16 - I had no idea HOW credentials & all of that worked - he just said - ‘Go get it. Speak FOR the Drivers’ with a cassette recorder, a microphone & a notepad. He took off into Gasoline Alley - where he was a mechanic on Indy Car engines. One must be 21 to be IN the Hot Pits, but I grew up there - I knew what NOT to do.

In 2002 - all of this - came to light. On the 10th anniversary of Dad’s passing (18 May) Bump Weekend ‘02, I was running thru the Hot Pits (you NEVER run in the pits unless it’s a 911 but IT was) & LOST my cell phone 🤦🏼‍♀️ The Team that labeled it in ‘01 FOUND it!? Was told that it had been taken to the Registrars office… the Registrars office? Had no need to enter that office - ever.

But it was a trip back in time, in more ways than 1: ‘We just called your Dad, he didn’t answer’. My face said: What?! His phone number still worked? ‘Oh, do you want us to remove HIS number?’ Oh - no, I said - please keep it. I was stunned. Then the lady proceeded tell me of all of Dad’s previous ’activity’ in their records, which are hard copies ONLY (not digitized). 😳

Dad wasn’t just able to find the ‘sweet spot’ in a sprint car engine - he actually entered Teams at Indy + was a highly sought-after Mechanic.

Exiting that - historical time warp, I hear my name called to the modern Media Center, where my Mother’s name was on file in case of a 911… yes, they needed to know - ‘WHAT YEAR were you born?! Our computers only have space for 1 year - which 1 is it?!’

1953, 1956 or 1959… A: 1959.

And that’s how a 16 year old GIRL landed her 1st gig with ABC Sports - they simply needed my audio… 🏎️ 👍🏼

I have so many questions for my Dad - someday 🏁
