As Reform UK’s Director of Policy, I helped write our policy to remove the exemption for carrying the kirpan (Sikh ceremonial knife). I also happen to be a practicing Sikh.

Generally my faith is not relevant to my job. However, in this case, my faith does not change my fundamental belief that the law of the land should apply to all equally, without fear or favour.

I’m not surprised to hear this called a ‘divide and rule strategy’ by an anonymous ‘community leader’ in the Guardian. Our policy is, however, plainly the opposite.

The implication that Reform is being racist is insane, even by the Guardian’s standards.

We are not ‘scapegoating’ Sikhs. We are saying that no race or religion should receive preferential treatment. This should be uncontroversial.
