ATTENTION PAGEANT LOVERS: Matthew’s ART PEOPLE exhibition opens 6/27 @LagunaArtMuseum. This exhibition attempts to unite the museum and @FestivalPageant, and isn’t it time we came together to celebrate art? That's our gold girl on stage, with her partner and a mythical beast🦄🐲
DASHING, ROGUISH AND SHREDDED-TO-ABSOLUTE-HELL, Aquaman wasn’t the first King of the Sea. Neptune the Roman god came first, and Poseidon the Greek OG before him! See Matthew’s version, capturing the sea god as depicted by the @FestivalPageant. DIVE IN, THE WATER’S FINE!
Former executive director of @LagunaArtMuseum Dr. Warner curated Matthew’s ART PEOPLE & eloquently explained the context of the work in his Foreword. Matthew and journalist @christinabinkley will give a talk at LAM tomorrow on the past, present & future of Laguna’s art community.
ALL KNIGHT-ER? Every artist dreams of being reviewed by Christopher Knight, one of the leading arts writers today. Matthew's no different! Art People, on view at LAM, was reviewed by Mr. Knight last week in the @latimes. We're very excited! And to all, a good KNIGHT.
GO WEST! The @FestivalPageant’s depiction of Lewis and Clark featured the key WOMAN in that story: Sacajawea, the only female in a group of 33 explorers. Matthew attempts to capture the strength & dignity of this heroic American as well as the human in the costume. WESTWARD, HO!
GET IN THE SWIM! Nick Wilder was a close friend to David Hockney, who painted him in 1966. 50 years later, the @FestivalPageant created a tableau of this well-known artwork, and then came Matthew, making a portrait of the volunteer portraying Wilder. Talk about art about art!
AN OPEN BOOK: It’s special. It’s not bound. It’s an accordion fold. @LagunaArtMuseum’s catalogue for Matthew’s exhibition ART PEOPLE appears to be one giant folded piece of paper. And if you set it on its end and open it up, it stands like a miniature gallery all by itself!
Marble brought to life, as can only be created by the @FestivalPageant. See this Adonis made of stone, in the flesh, on the walls of Matthew’s ART PEOPLE at @LagunaArtMuseum. Check out the painting of the Tomb of Maria Christina originally sculpted by Antonio Canova in the 1820s!
UNDER THE SEA… Neptune may rule the waves, but he needs an assist from a beautiful pair of mythical creatures - ‘Neptune’s Paredrae.’ Find these demi-goddesses of the sea on dry land lol. See them on the walls of Matthew’s ART PEOPLE exhibition, now on view at @LagunaArtMuseum.
COLLECTOR’S ITEM! Don’t miss the opportunity to acquire the special Collector’s Edition of Matthew Rolston’s ART PEOPLE exhibition catalogue, published by @LagunaArtMuseum. It's numbered, signed, includes a folio with an actual art print, and there AREN’T VERY MANY!
STERLING SILVER. Here’s Matthew’s amazing portrait of a @FestivalPageant volunteer, painted in silver from head to toe, and the Pageant’s incredible re-creation. ALL THAT GLITTERS ISN’T GOLD…
Exciting news! TONIGHT ONLY: Matthew Rolston IN PERSON at @LagunaArtMuseum, 6pm. Come hear him talk about ART PEOPLE w/the @GettyMuseum’s Curator of Photographs, Paul Martineau, moderated by arts writer Lindsay Preston Zappas & intro by LAM’s Executive Director, Julie Perlin Lee!
THE LAST SUPPER. It’s always been the @FestivalPageant’s finale. Here’s a close-up of Matthew’s portrait of a volunteer in this beloved tableau, based on da Vinci’s mural, depicting the traitorous Judas Iscariot. Doesn’t the expression on his face foretell all? JUDAS KISS?
AS GOOD AS GOLD! Here’s a close-up of Matthew’s portrait of Roger, a medieval knight in the epic tale “Roger and Angelica.” Check out the original sculpture by French master Antoine-Louis Barye. Fun fact: Roger is the counterpart to the beautiful Angelica, OUR GOLD GIRL!
CAN’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER? Well actually, in this case, you can! Neptune, God of the Sea, graces the cover of @lagunaartmuseum’s exhibition catalogue of Matthew’s ART PEOPLE.
LET’S ALL GET ON THE SAME PAGE.

GREEN WITH ENVY! Another impersonation of a famous sculpture, Don Quixote’s sidekick Sancho Panza. Isn’t it amazing how the @FestivalPageant re-creates weathered bronze on the human face? Valera’s 1930 sculpture lives on in Madrid’s Plaza de España. AND HE HAS A GREEN THUMB!
SOMETIMES, YOU’RE THE PIGEON, SOMETIMES YOU’RE THE SCULPTURE… That’s just something we all have to accept. Here, the sculpture is a @FestivalPageant volunteer, bringing to life Canova’s elaborate tomb, honoring the death of an archduchess. ART IS LONG, AND LIFE IS SHORT 🗽⚰️
"It's a simulacra and an illusion -- somewhere between humanity and a depiction of humanity. And that has some intrinsic, almost primitive fascination for people." CNN explores @FestivalPageant and @rolstonstudio's "Art People" exhibition at LAM: https://t.co/4Z1IEeB2Fz
Matthew Rolston's portrait of Sancho Panza from the 2016 Pageant of the Masters shows us the faithful squire to Don Quixote. At right, the 1930 bronze model for the tableaux vivant recreation. Now on view: https://t.co/7gtMkAIer1 #LagunaBeach#MatthewRolston#PageantOfTheMasters
