Roma ISD Earns Texas Comptroller Transparency Star Recognition, District Recognized for Excellence in Financial Transparency and Accountability
Roma ISD has been recognized by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts with a prestigious Transparency Star for Traditional Finances, highlighting the district's commitment to fiscal responsibility, accountability, and open government.
The Texas Comptroller's Transparency Stars Program recognizes local governments across Texas that go above and beyond to provide citizens with clear, meaningful, and easily accessible financial information. The voluntary program honors entities that demonstrate exceptional transparency by making financial documents, summaries, visualizations, downloadable data, and other important public information readily available online.
Roma ISD is proud to be the only government entity in Starr County currently recognized with a Texas Comptroller Transparency Star, reflecting the district's dedication to earning and maintaining the trust of its taxpayers, employees, parents, and community members.
"This recognition reflects Roma ISD's unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship of taxpayer resources," said Roma ISD Superintendent Carlos M. Gonzalez Jr. "Our community deserves access to clear and accurate financial information, and we are proud to provide that level of openness. We appreciate the continued support of our Board of Trustees, whose leadership and commitment to sound financial practices have helped make this achievement possible."
To earn a Transparency Star, participating entities must meet rigorous standards established by the Texas Comptroller. Applicants are required to maintain a dedicated transparency webpage that includes user-friendly financial summaries, historical financial documents, interactive charts and visualizations, downloadable datasets, and other resources that allow taxpayers to better understand how public funds are managed. Transparency Stars are reviewed on an ongoing basis to ensure recipients continue to meet the program's high standards.
Roma ISD's Financial Transparency web page provides community members with access to years of financial information, including adopted budgets, Annual Comprehensive Financial Reports, Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) reports, historical tax rate information, debt information, check registers, and additional financial resources designed to promote openness and accountability.
"Our goal has always been to operate with integrity and transparency," said Pedro Alaniz, Roma ISD Chief Financial Officer. "This recognition validates the hard work of the team and reinforces our commitment to serving our community with honesty, responsibility, and accountability. I am very proud of every member of our Business Team."

Roma ISD, in partnership with South Texas College and Starr County Memorial Hospital, has been awarded a $100,000 grant through Texas Workforce Solutions to provide paid Health Sciences internships for Roma High School students.
The collaborative grant will support 81 students throughout the year, including 23 students who will begin internships during June and July. The remaining students will participate during the academic school year. Students selected for the program will earn $15 per hour while gaining valuable hands-on experience at Starr County Memorial Hospital.
This marks a historic milestone for Roma ISD, as for the first time, Roma High School students interested in healthcare careers will have the opportunity to participate in paid internships within a real hospital setting, strengthening their career readiness and preparing them for postsecondary education and future employment in the healthcare industry.
"This grant represents an incredible investment in the future of our students and our community," said Roma ISD Superintendent Carlos M. Gonzalez, Jr. "Through this outstanding partnership, our students will gain meaningful, real-world healthcare experience while earning a paycheck. We are sincerely grateful to Texas Workforce Solutions for making this opportunity possible and for helping us prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals."
"All the work we are doing with this and other partnerships is about growing, expanding, and improving lives and being better than we have been in the past," said Starr County Memorial Hospital Board President Dr. Adrian Guerra. "If we can impart on the young men and women that have the privilege of participating in this program one piece of advice it would be to always look for ways to improve yourselves and our community. Be better than you were the day before and focus on that bigger vision."
Roma ISD extends its sincere appreciation to Texas Workforce Solutions for investing in workforce development and expanding educational opportunities that will positively impact students and the future healthcare workforce of Starr County.

Roma ISD Strengthens Student Safety with Purchase of 10 New Seat-Belt Equipped School Buses
Roma ISD is continuing its commitment to student safety with the purchase of 10 new Longhorn school buses, scheduled for delivery during the 2026–2027 school year.
This investment comes as part of the district’s effort to comply with updated Texas safety regulations that require newly purchased school buses to be equipped with three-point seat belts. The law, passed by the Texas Legislature, mandates that all new buses placed into service include seat belts to enhance student protection during transportation.
"By proactively adding these buses to its fleet, we are ensuring full compliance with state requirements while prioritizing the well-being of its students," said Roma ISD Superintendent Carlos M. Gonzalez Jr.. "The new Longhorn buses will provide a safer, more secure ride for students traveling to and from school and extracurricular activities."
Roma ISD extends a sincere thank you to the Board of Trustees for their thoughtful consideration and approval of this important purchase. Their continued support of student safety and district needs helps ensure that Roma ISD remains proactive, responsible, and student-centered in every decision.
🎉🍎Roma ISD Launches PREP Mentorship Program to Support and Strengthen Novice Teachers
Roma ISD is proud to announce the implementation of the Texas Education Agency's Preparing and Retaining Educators through Partnership (PREP) Mentorship Program for the 2026-2027 school year. This marks the first time Roma ISD will offer the innovative program, providing enhanced support and professional development opportunities for first- and second-year teachers across the district.
The PREP Mentorship Program is designed to help novice educators successfully navigate the challenges of the teaching profession by pairing them with trained mentor teachers who provide ongoing coaching, guidance, and support throughout the instructional day. Through structured mentoring relationships, new teachers receive valuable assistance as they develop effective classroom practices, strengthen instructional skills, and build confidence in their role as educators.
As part of the program, mentor teachers and campus leaders will participate in state-developed mentorship training focused on research-based mentoring practices and strategies. This specialized training ensures mentors are equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to effectively support and encourage beginning teachers throughout their professional journey.
In addition to professional learning opportunities, the PREP Mentorship Program provides financial resources to support implementation efforts, mentor training, and dedicated mentoring time. The investment reflects the state's commitment to improving teacher retention and ensuring that novice educators receive the support they need to thrive in the classroom.
Roma ISD leaders believe the program will have a significant impact on teacher success and student achievement by fostering collaboration, professional growth, and a strong culture of support throughout the district.
"Our teachers are the foundation of student success, and we are excited to provide this additional level of support for our newest educators," said Roma ISD Superintendent Carlos M. Gonzalez Jr. "The PREP Mentorship Program is an investment in our teachers, our campuses, and ultimately our students. By equipping novice teachers with experienced mentors and meaningful professional development, we are helping build a strong foundation for long-term success in the classroom."
The launch of the PREP Mentorship Program aligns with Roma ISD's ongoing commitment to innovation, professional excellence, and ensuring that every educator has the resources needed to provide high-quality instruction for every student, every day.
As Roma ISD prepares for the new school year, district leaders look forward to seeing the positive impact this program will have on teacher development, retention, and student outcomes for years to come.
