▪️Prelims Bites, Today’s Topic: “Clouds”
👉 Types of Clouds & Their Significance for UPSC CSE
Here's a simple breakdown of cloud types & their impact on weather!
👇
1️⃣ High-Level Clouds (Above 20,000 feet)
These clouds are mostly made of ice crystals and usually indicate changing weather.
🔹 Cirrus (Ci) – Thin, wispy clouds seen in fair weather, but may signal a storm approaching. 🔹 Cirrostratus (Cs) – Thin, uniform layer covering the sky, often creating a halo effect around the Sun/Moon. 🔹 Cirrocumulus (Cc) – Small, rippled, patchy clouds—usually appear before cold fronts or a weather disturbance.
2️⃣ Mid-Level Clouds (6,500 to 20,000 feet)
Contain both ice crystals & water droplets.
🔹 Altocumulus (Ac) – White/gray patches in groups or waves, common in warm, humid mornings before a thunderstorm. 🔹 Altostratus (As) – Gray or blueish cloud layer covering the sky—often brings light rain or snow. 🔹 Nimbostratus (Ns) – Thick, dark clouds bringing continuous rain or snowfall (nimbus = rain!).
3️⃣ Low-Level Clouds (Below 6,500 feet)
Mostly water droplets, with some bringing rain.
🔹 Stratocumulus (Sc) – Large, lumpy, gray clouds; usually don’t bring much rain. 🔹 Stratus (St) – Uniform, gray cloud cover; brings drizzle, fog, or mist. 🔹 Cumulus (Cu) – Fluffy, cotton-like clouds seen in fair weather, but can grow into storms.
4️⃣ Clouds with Vertical Growth (Extend across multiple levels)
🔹 Cumulonimbus (Cb) – The King of Storms 🌩️. Towering clouds with an anvil top that bring heavy rain, lightning, thunderstorms, hail, and even tornadoes.
