RETURNING RIVERS STATE TO ITS GARDEN CITY STATUS.
Rep. O. K. Chinda is an environmentalist who has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to the environment. As a Commissioner for Environment in Rivers State, he introduced several initiatives aimed at improving sanitation, promoting environmental responsibility, and preserving the state's identity as the Garden City of Nigeria.
On October 8, 2009, he established the Rivgreen Marshals, tasked with monitoring environmental sanitation and ensuring compliance with government environmental policies. He also inaugurated a 21-member Technical Committee on Environmental Sanitation to strengthen efforts towards maintaining a clean and healthy environment across the state.
Other initiatives were the Rivgreen Corporate Forum, an interactive platform that brought stakeholders together to discuss environmental concerns, waste-to-wealth initiatives, and the broader Rivgreen "Return to Eden" greening programme. The Rivgreen Clubs, an environmental advocacy and educational student group established in primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions in Rivers State to promote ecological awareness, tree planting, and proper waste management. Teaching students about the 3Rs (Waste Reduction, Reuse, and Recycling). These initiatives reflected his determination to restore and sustain Rivers State's Garden City identity.
As Commissioner for Environment, Rep. Chinda also promoted and sponsored tree planting and the beautification of public spaces. Some of the trees lining major roads in the state were planted during his tenure as part of efforts to improve the environment and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the state.
At one of the stakeholders' meetings held on June 4, 2009, he said, as captured in the minutes of the meeting: -
โBarr. Chinda said the RSMENV is putting up an emission legislation which when passed will become a law to regulate fumes. The RSMENV Commissioner urged everyone to start tree planting adding that if every person in Rivers State planted a tree then we would have planted 6 million trees. He said we should contribute to cleaning PH in order to return it to the Garden City status.โ
His record as Commissioner demonstrates that environmental sustainability has long been an important part of his public service vision. From sanitation and waste management to tree planting and environmental regulation, his initiatives were focused on creating a cleaner, greener, and more liveable Rivers State and returning it to the Garden City status.
With O. K. Chinda, our environment will be OK!
OK IS OKAY!

As the world marks this year's International Youth Day, I celebrate the strength, creativity, and potential of youths across Rivers State and Nigeria.
Our youths are not merely leaders of tomorrow; they are important partners in building the society we desire today. With the right education, skills, opportunities, and support, the youths can transform challenges into opportunities and drive meaningful development.
I encourage our youths to believe in themselves, embrace knowledge and skills acquisition, remain focused on their dreams, and actively contribute to the growth of their communities.
As leaders, we must continue to create an environment where young people can thrive, innovate, lead, fulfil their potential, and become 'fishers' themselves for self-reliance.
Happy International Youth Day!
