Beyond Blind Luck.

People often talk about luck in one dimension - either as something out of our control, random or something entirely due to preparation. In reality, luck is more nuanced. In 1978, Dr. James Austin introduced a framework that breaks luck down into 4 distinct types, and this is the best way I’ve found to think about it.

Type 1: Blind Luck
This is pure chance - luck you have no control over, like where you were born or who your parents are.

Applying it to crypto: You happen to long a coin just before it gets a Binance listing, causing the price to skyrocket. Assuming you had no insider knowledge, this is pure luck. Or maybe you bought and forgot about some random low marketcap memecoin, and weeks later it skyrockets after a big KOL endorses it.

Type 2: Luck from Motion
This type of luck comes from staying active, putting yourself out there, and opening yourself up to lucky opportunities. It’s the luck generated by hustle and saying yes to new things.

Applying it to crypto: You find an early promising community and start engaging and providing help. Over time, you connect with key developers who later launch a project (likely with a token) and invite you onto the team because of your early involvement. In crypto specifically, being early and active consistently pays off big.

Type 3: Luck from Awareness
This luck arises from your ability to spot opportunities that others miss, thanks to your deep understanding of the space. You become skilled at recognising luck when it appears.

Applying it to crypto: After going through DeFi Summer and spending a lot of time analyzing DeFi protocols, their benefits, and drawbacks, you follow numerous write-ups and governance proposals. One day, you come across a proposal that offers a solution to a highly niche problem you had been thinking about in the back of your mind. It’s a non-consensus idea, but your deep knowledge helps you recognise its potential.

Type 4: Luck from Uniqueness
Luck that comes to you because of your distinct skills, hobbies, or quirks. People seek you out for your expertise, and luck follows from there.

Applying it to crypto: You’re highly knowledgeable in a rare technical skill, like smart contract development, and have built a solid reputation in the space. Projects come to you with lucrative deals or advisory roles due to your unique expertise.

By recognising different types of luck, you can increase your chances of benefitting from them. It’s also important to distinguish between them, so you don’t fool yourself about your position or rely solely on blind luck when strategy and preparation are needed.
