Then she pushed the envelopes back towards me.

"The money was never the gift."

"It was just my way of making sure you never threw these away."

That afternoon, I realised she'd been giving me something far more valuable than cash.

She'd been collecting proof that, even when life got hard, I'd always had the ability to choose kindness.

I still keep those envelopes.

Not because of the money inside.

But because, whenever I start doubting the person I'm becoming...

They remind me of the person I already was.
