‘I believe the very best journalism reflects the voices of the many not the few’. I was asked to write for @Broadcastnow Magazine & @itn this month to intro my essay on my work @itvnews investigating #COVID19’s impact on ethnic minorities in the new book: #ITVreportingcoronavirus
Scoops: ITV News producer Roohi Hasan was determined to understand why Covid-19 had a disproportionate affect on black, Asian and minority ethnic NHS staff: https://t.co/R0ItwAuffO @itn#ITN65
'My question for Nigel Farage is - why does the family of Henry Nowak mean nothing to you?'
@Peston addresses Farage directly over his claims of 'two-tier' policing.
The Reform leader called for people to respond with ‘pure, cold rage’, despite the family's appeal for calm.
@DMiliband So sorry for yours and Ed’s loss David. What an incredible life she led. And I’m sure she would be proud of you and your legacy specially with IRC
We’re downplaying stuff that should be banner headlines. We’ve been
trapped into thinking of climate change as ‘woke.’ We – wrongly – think our
readers don’t care. And when we get the hottest May on record we, once
again, miss the real story. https://t.co/FjDk82cjEr
As we go into Eid and Muslims worldwide are joyous, celebrating this special occasion, I can’t help but feel anxious. Last week three men were shot and killed at the San Diego Islamic Centre, protecting the children and worshippers. This year there have been numerous hate attacks on mosques in the UK. When I mention these incidents, some do not comprehend the gravity of what I am relaying. This is unacceptable.
I’m a keep calm and carry on person who sees the best in people which gives me hope and optimism. But today, I am carrying the weight of the anxiety of communities around the country. To play down their fears or the dangerousness of the dog whistle politics we hear on a daily basis - only serves to sweep the very real issues of anti-Muslim hostility & its impact - under the carpet.
I am truly appalled at the video posted by Israeli Cabinet Minister Ben-Gvir taunting those involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla.
This violates the most basic standards of respect and dignity in the way people should be treated.
We are in touch with the families of a number of British nationals involved to provide them with consular support.
We have demanded an explanation from the Israeli authorities and made clear their obligations to protect the rights of our citizens and all those involved.
Social media giants should not be allowed to pay politicians for extreme posts that maximise engagement. Foreign funding of unregulated digital ads must cease. And those who promote political violence should not be allow to fund campaigns.
3. Finally - an immediate step is to stop the flow of foreign money into our politics, which is bolstering the extreme far right. It is unacceptable that people like Elon Musk are able to give out cash while calling for political violence.
Effective community politics, delivering for people while challenging racism and pushing back against the rhetoric of the far right in the places where people are is essential, and needs strengthening.
2. We need to rebuild unity in our communities. People organised effectively against the national front decades ago, though much of that infrastructure died back in the 1990s and noughties as the threat lessened.
Political leaders of all parties need to show they will not tolerate racism. Ted Heath did the right thing with Enoch Powell fifty years ago - modern political leaders should do the same.
Similarly, when political parties see council candidates talk of “Jewish conspiracies” and other tropes - as we did in May, there should be no question that they immediately are suspended - from any party.
1. Rebuild the cordon sanitaire in our politics. When Robert Jenrick complained of brown faces in Birmingham, or Sarah Pochin spoke of being “driven mad” by black people on TV adverts, they should have lost the whip and become parliamentary outcasts.
We have to fight back.
The march is symptomatic of taboos around racism, Antisemitism and Islamophobia diluting and weakening. This is extremely dangerous.
We need to do three things:
This from Lib Dem leader, whilst Kemi Badenoch Tories leader told Trevor Phillips she thinks far right Tommy Robinson & his followers include good people wanting to ‘Unite the Kingdom’ & instead wants to ban the anti war peace protests which want to stop mass killings in Gaza.
Though smaller than last year, the Unite the Kingdom march over the weekend was still sickening. The resurgence of out-and-out racism in the UK, from demands for remigration of British Asians to Antisemitic slurs on placards at both demonstrations, demands we meet this moment.
Footage of a Muslim officer being abused at a protest was widely shared this weekend.
It happened a few weeks ago and we won’t be resharing the video, but yesterday we saw more of the same.
Nobody should have to put up with abuse at work and that includes police officers.
Arrests were made in all these incidents and we'll be pushing for charges in every case.
