Rohith’s institutional murder was fundamental to my understanding of systemic casteism, right after I finished school. The past decade taught me so much about where I come from, where I stand and how to survive whatever may come.

My parents did everything to provide quality education and resources to groom me into a bright child, to compensate for the disadvantages caste imposed on them. But despite all the class and culture of a private school in a posh neighbourhood, hearing your caste used as a derogatory slur to insult someone at the tender age of eight leaves a deep scar— one you continue to forever hide out of shame. You wish you were a Sharma, a Kapoor, a Bhardwaj, so that questions about your ambiguous last name weren’t daunting; inviting friends to your home in a Harijan colony— despite having a beautiful house— wasn't a nightmare; defending basic human rights without being told it’s in your selfish interest wasn’t exclusionary from public discourse.

Then you step out into the world and learn what it takes to be where you are and what it means not to betray the struggles of your ancestors. You learn to take true pride in your people, your story, your roots. Because that is how you heal. That is how you become invincible in this cruel, dehumanising country and world. It is how you move forward with self-respect, acceptance and dignity towards real power in a fake, pretentious, material world that is out to get you, to make you feel small and drain your ambitions, potential and labour by telling the best of your people that they are unworthy, undeserving and unmeritorious, while it thrives on religious fear, irrationality, intimidation, deception and other kinds of violence and exploitation.

May you always move forward and carry the revolutionary optimism of Babasaheb, Phule and all those who fought endless atrocities and odds for the dream of an equal society. You owe them a life well lived.
