It’s ridiculous that we even have not guilty by reason of insanity as a verdict option in a murder trial. Most murderers are insane definitionally on some level. Why should society care?

The jury’s options should be:

You did it and you meant to

You did it but you didn’t mean to (manslaughter)

You did it, but it was justified (self-defense etc)

You didn’t do it.

Not guilty by reason of insanity seems like the outgrowth of a society that’s looking for excuses not to punish criminals.
