On the eve of Independence Day, we pause to reflect on the enduring promise of America.

Tomorrow, we'll celebrate the birth of our nation. Tonight, we remember the generations of Americans whose courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to liberty have kept that promise alive.

President Theodore Roosevelt once said, "This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a good place for all of us to live in." Those words remind us that patriotism isn't just something we celebrate—it's something we practice through service, leadership, and a commitment to one another.

Few works capture that spirit more powerfully than Johnny Cash's Ragged Old Flag. It's a tribute to a nation that has weathered hardship, stood resilient in the face of challenge, and continued striving toward a more perfect Union.

July 2, 1776 wasn't just another day in history—it was the day America chose freedom.

On this day, the Second Continental Congress voted for independence in Philadelphia, setting in motion the birth of a new nation. Two days later, the Declaration of Independence would give voice to timeless ideals that continue to inspire people around the world.

Nearly 250 years later, the principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness remain the foundation of our republic. They remind us that freedom is sustained not only by those who founded our nation, but by every generation willing to lead, serve, and protect the institutions that make self-government possible.

St. Patrick’s Day is a reminder of the power of community.

Here in Arizona, we’re fortunate to have a vibrant Irish community that brings people together through culture, tradition, and service. The Irish spirit isn’t just something we celebrate today — it’s something we live year-round at the Irish Cultural Center and McClelland Library.

We celebrated our 43rd Parade and Faire on Saturday. We had the Speaker of the Irish Parliament come to the Valley to promote trade and partnership across Phoenix. Yesterday was full of meetings with the Arizona Legislature and AZ-Ireland Trade Commission. Last night we had a reception with business, political and community leaders of the Irish Diaspora with PCFR. And today we will have free programming for all to enjoy at the Center and Library.

Whether we saw you over the last few days or you were celebrating in other ways, the strength of the Irish of Arizona is in full showcase this week.

On February 14, 1912, the Grand Canyon State officially joined the Union, marking a new chapter of opportunity, independence, and Western grit.

🇺🇸🤝🇩🇪 On This Day: January 24, 1902 — Roosevelt Prepares to Welcome Royalty

On this day in 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt issued Executive Order 162, formally authorizing the reception of Prince Henry of Prussia, brother of Kaiser Wilhelm II, for an official visit to the United States.

Roosevelt named senior military and diplomatic officials—including Rear Admiral Robley D. Evans and Major General Henry C. Corbin—as delegates empowered to coordinate the prince’s reception, travel, and entertainment, with expenses authorized through the Secretary of State.

📝 The order marked a rare moment of early 20th-century transatlantic diplomacy, as tensions in Europe simmered and the U.S. emerged as a global power. The Prince’s visit, scheduled for February 1902, was partly ceremonial and partly symbolic—meant to strengthen goodwill between the United States and Imperial Germany, especially as both nations jockeyed for influence on the world stage.

During his American tour, Prince Henry visited New York, Washington, Pittsburgh, and even christened the imperial yacht Meteor—built in the U.S. as a gift from Kaiser Wilhelm.

Roosevelt viewed the visit as an opportunity to display America’s stature, hospitality, and naval prowess. Though relations between the two nations would eventually fray, the 1902 visit stood as a high point of ceremonial diplomacy in Roosevelt’s first term.

This executive order wasn’t just about protocol—it was about projecting confidence, fostering peace, and asserting Roosevelt’s belief that diplomacy could be pursued with strength and courtesy alike.
