I want to recommend two books that few people have read and that many have not even heard of. The first is Stefan Zweig's The World of Yesterday translated by Anthea Bell. It's Zweig's memoir. His life is fascinating in and of itself. But his observations about Vienna and Germany and the world between the two world wars are superb. The second is The Radetzky March by Joseph Roth, translated by Michael Hofmann. This is a novel set during the decline and decay of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Not that much happens but the writing and the atmosphere is exceptional, at times funny, at times almost unbearably tragic. Among many things it captures what it's like to be a person who feels unmoored as the world around him falls apart. A little too timely for my taste and your mileage may differ, but I really enjoyed it.
@AllisonPearson congratulations for standing up for yourself and finally being vindicated, in what must have been a horrible two years. Did you accept his apology? ‘Sorry’ is a cheap word unless it’s said with intent #planetnormal
@Pops__o The Overton Window has contracted & too many people think that they are on the side of the angels. Back yourself (you are right). And bring back philosophy in schools to help people navigate moral nuance. Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me…♥️
@TinnedFishMan have you heard the interesting story of King Crab 🇨🇱in a can, last 10mins of this pod? Have you ever come across this? If not might be worth and exploration. A can with a story? Keep up the good work
@NickDixon Me too. But one led to another and people who don’t know either artist should explore those ‘an introduction to…’ because they are well put together.
@CamdenLabour I read 👇🏻 &I’m confused. #mericapak is the most experienced candidate, known locally, but why do you use the following as his main attribute for re-election? Bins, recycling, dodgy #yoocapital planning applications…🤔
@AllisonPearson ‘my moment’ - day 1 of lockdown. I turned the radio (4) off, rode to an empty office and never turned it back on. Then I found #planetnormal . Not sure that’s worth a mug 😉
