Help support some awesome kids headed to the Gulf to research ecosystem respiration and productivity (among other really cool things)! We’re getting closer to being able to cover expenses for all these kids!
Students finished their swabbing, and got results back. Based on their finding, neither Bd nor Bsal are found in the very upper reaches of the Elk River watershed. Then, they discussed their findings at the KS Herp Society Conference!
Another great day of herping! We were lucky enough to come across several western slimy salamanders. Unfortunately, these aren’t the target species were after. However, it’s still cool to see their excitement when they find a salamander!
Starting a new project at school: MC Outdoor Research Class! Students will conduct authentic research and present their findings at conferences throughout the year. They’re even eligible for college credit!
This is the 9th SOPE class since we started. It has come a long way since we started way back in 2019, and I am amazed at what students are accomplishing!
It’s easy sometimes to get stuck on the worst of humanity, and humans have indeed carried out horrible atrocities and injustices. However, when I see the images from the JWST, I remember that humans are capable of amazing things when they work together for good.
Week 1 of SOPE is done! We learned about whippoorwills from @ellycknight, practiced our sketching skills, collected insects and cuticular wax samples for @PlantsRChemists!
2021-22 is in the books! It was one of the most bittersweet endings I’ve had. These kids have made two tough years of education not only tolerable, but enjoyable. It will be hard to walk back into my classroom in August and not see their faces.
Winning awards and accepting compliments isn’t something I’m good at. I want to share this one, though, because it’s not just my award. It’s also an award for dozens of students who have helped shape what I do and make my job interesting and wonderful!
Twitter doesn’t give enough space for what we did! Caving, counting bats, map reading, hiking, fire starting and outdoor cooking were all on the list for Spring SOPE’s first week!
@KevinMouser2 The new standards are intended to develop 21st Century Thinking Skills. I love the variety in MS/JH. It allows me to create units that pull from different disciplines.
