I am a NHS consultant. I am financially comfortable, in a job I love, so why am I striking tomorrow?
Answer: Because the next generation will not be able to live off what I do today. The juniors that will become these consultants know this and are leaving already.
Why? 🧵 👇
Here’s my payslip as a first year doctor in 2005, next to a first year doctor colleague’s in 2023. 18 years later, their take home salary is less than mine was. I lived for free in hospital accommodation and had a fraction of their student loan.

Just finished a busy shift in A&E.
It’s evident that people in insecure, low-paid jobs, can’t afford to take days off work to get simple conditions treated. They’re delaying, and ending up in A&E when it gets severe.
Health inequalities are growing - the impact will be deadly.
