The riptide of middle-age. Half of you still feels the urge to life and the imperative to overcome obstacles to living. The other half knows your time is dwindling and recognizes an equally powerful imperative to embrace the breakdown of your body and the finality of death.
At the airport, I have often expressed that I prefer a window seat "so that if the plane crashes I can see the ground coming up". Social media offers a similar perspective.
@SalomeSibonex As you may know, I ran a discussion group (700+members) entirely dedicated to “civil discourse” for nearly 9 years. But recently, painfully, had to admit defeat and give it up. Humans are, sadly, not even remotely built for what Julia Galef calls “Scout Mindset”.
Regrettably, I have to return my copy of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Penguin), because it is missing pages and because the pages it does have are out of order.
Sometimes it is necessary to vacate not only the external world, but the internal world of thought and feeling, to drop out and decompose into a sort of dark, slow-flowing, molasses-like, goo. Deep peace therein resides.
We didn't realize it at the time, but Google's harmless little "search bar" was in fact the blinking open of the eye of the life form that would eventually replace us.
