That is the sentence Stephen Vincent Chavez received after pleading guilty to felony incest involving his 18-year-old biological daughter, Makayla Renee Settles, and to a misdemeanor charge of providing alcohol to a minor. He was sentenced to one year in Ventura County Jail followed by three years of felony probation. Prosecutors had asked the judge for the maximum three years in state prison.

According to the Ventura County District Attorney, Makayla was staying with her father in Moorpark, California, in July 2025. After drinking at a family gathering, Chavez purchased additional alcohol for the two of them, and he subsequently had sexual intercourse with her. Chavez also admitted that he abused a position of trust and that Makayla was particularly vulnerable.

Makayla died by suicide in December 2025, five months later. 💔

Her family maintained that she had been raped. The DA's office said it conducted an extensive review—including forensic testing, medical evaluations, interviews and electronic evidence—to determine whether a rape charge could legally be pursued, but concluded the admissible evidence supported the felony incest charge instead.

One year in county jail.
