There’s plenty of talk about the value of extrinsic v intrinsic motivation in education. I don’t think they necessarily need to be seen as separate entities. I’ve seen plenty of pupils develop intrinsic motivation having been won over to the joy of learning through stickers.

And so I do a home visit. It’s not easy because things haven’t been going too well.

The door opens. 4th floor. I’m welcomed in.

He’s very excited. Two worlds colliding, home and school.

He grabs my hand and tells me he wants me to see his room.

I play the game and we step inside. An empty room with a mattress in the corner.

And then I look closer.

The walls around his pillow are covered.

Every single sticker, every moment of recognition - carefully removed from his school jumper, collected and displayed.

And now I see. Who could ever know the true significance of teacher praise?

What a privilege to be here on the N&W Campus @NatInstTeaching as our wonderful trainees commence their first episode of Intensive Training & Practice at the start of their initial teacher training year. There is a real buzz in the room, probably a mix of nerves and excitement!
