Plenty we agree on when it comes to supporting growth in renewables Geoff, but surely surely if we're taking an evidence based approach the most important evidence is the scale of the climate crisis facing us?

I have a great deal of respect for Ruth but this silly post is sadly reflective of a wider commentariat that fails to understand an issue of vital importance to domestic energy and economic security.

Firstly, industry in Aberdeen is almost entirely supportive of renewables. It hosts a world-class subsea engineering supply chain (the largest cluster of such energy companies in the UK) that is our USP in our effort to deliver green offshore energy. Sadly, the reality is governments, north and south of border, have placed consenting delays and policy barriers (SSEP/ TNUoS) in place preventing the investment required to unlock the vast pipeline of renewables projects (majority off north and north east cost) so they are available commercially and at scale - which they are currently some years off. The transition is stalling and that is regrettable but definitely recoverable with clear focus and bold decision making. Scotland can genuinely be a global leader in this space. So the only apology Ruth should make is to the host of companies in Aberdeen and wider region that are diversifying their businesses to capitalise on renewables but lack volume of orders to sustain profits (and thus jobs) for the long term.

Secondly, consult any credible data and it will confirm oil and gas still cover about three-quarters of UK energy use today, projected to be approximately a fifth of demand by 2050 as renewables scale up. The question therefore is not whether we need oil and gas but whether we use more of our domestic UKCS supply or rely even more on imports? The latter is certainly bad for jobs (thousands have been lost) balance of payments, security of supply and indeed the environment/ carbon emissions. But I suppose it may make some ill informed twitter experts feel better about themselves.

Thirdly, a simple cursory goggle search shows other oil and gas producing ‘west’ nations ramping up not decreasing production as well as renewables - Norway, Denmark and Canada to name a few. Why? See above. Are these all climate denying, right wing lunatics too? No, they are pragmatic and know it’s not an either/ or situation.

Fourthly and finally, I will look on with interest at the GERS figures this week as my fellow nationalists talk up the strength of the Scottish economy. I’d just urge them to note the revenues from oil and gas (including the punitive EPL) as they do so.

We need less virtue signalling and more evidence based discussion on this issue.

Eitan Newman, a 17-year-old Israeli, grills one of Apartheid Israel's most genocidal politicians, on an Israeli TV program called "First Vote" in an August 2, 2026 interview.

It's a rare moment in Hebrew media when a genocidal Israeli politician is forced to defend genocide on live TV. Here's a condensced transcript:

Newman: Call it what you want, ethnic cleansing, transfer, voluntary emigration, fine. So, I want to ask you, what will happen to the Gazan who doesn't want to emigrate? Will IDF soldiers pile him onto a truck and expel him? Where will they take him? What will you do to him?

Feiglin: First of all, the vast majority of them want to leave, okay?

Newman: I asked about those who don't want to leave.

Feiglin: We need to encourage them to leave, because whoever doesn't leave will murder you.

Newman: That's not what I asked. I asked, what will you do to someone you wanted to leave and doesn't leave.

Feiglin: You'll make him leave.

Newman: What does "make" mean?

Feiglin: Every way possible. We'll shut off his water pipes, for example. Just an example.

Newman: And whoever doesn't leave can die, as far as you're concerned?

Feiglin: Then he'll be thirsty. He'll have to leave to drink a cup of water. Just an example.

Newman: So, for example, kind of kill off everyone?

Newman: Yes? Like everyone should die? Either they go or they die? Are they not human?

Feiglin: It's pretty stunning, excuse me, that after October 7, you treat us like murderers and that Islamo-Nazi terror entity like it's under attack. Forgive me.

Newman: I'm asking about your policy. I'm trying to understand what will happen if you're elected to the Knesset.

Feiglin: You know, I have a grandson your age, okay? His brother lies right now beneath a grave marker because of such questions.

Newman: So, I'm like responsible for his killing? Is that what you're saying?

Feiglin: No, I'm saying that your twisted worldview, which pursues the human rights of that murderous entity, led in the end to that disaster.

Newman: So, everyone should die. Two million people will die. However many you say are there, they should die.

Feiglin: I'm suggesting to you that you also listen to the person you're asking, not only to yourself.

A fascinating interview in Haaretz today with an IDF artillery soldier, part of the crew that fired thousands of shells into Gaza. She has been discharged and now suffers from PTSD, partly due to trauma from combat in Lebanon and partly due to the realization she has been part of and responsible for severe war crimes:

1) She was responsible for targeting. Not picking the targets but making sure they were hit: ""My job was to calculate firing data, prepare targets, and send them to the soldiers on the guns."

2) She explains how innacurate artillery is and how its use is inherently killing civilians even in cases where the target is military: "In the army they told us we only kill terrorists, but that's a lie. Artillery fire isn't accurate — a hit within a 50-meter radius is considered a good hit."

3) She did not process all the people she had killed until after discharge. The IDF atmosphere is designed to protect you from that realization: ""I left the army and saw the number of children who had been killed, and I was shocked. I started searching obsessively. I looked up the neighborhoods we'd attacked, the villages. I saw that a lot of innocent people were killed in those places. I saw photos of dead children."

4) The guilt ate her up: ""In my head I see the children dying, the mothers crying. I imagine them pulling out the bodies. The guilt doesn't leave. How is it possible? I killed an innocent girl. I'm the one who fed in the targets. It's on me."

5) It changed her political opinions: "Before the army I was far-right, the kind who says 'death to Arabs.' But after the war I understood there's a difference between Hamas terrorists and Palestinian civilians who want peace, who want life."

6) She wants to atone but does not know how: ""I understood that I want to help as many people as possible — to atone for everything I did, for all the dead babies."

This person is a war criminal. But she is also a victim of a society and army which raises you to be a war criminal. Her story is a reminder that these soldiers are human beings. Maybe they can be reached and their minds changed. But it is also a reminder of how the genocidal system that produced her creates criminals and manufactures consent for crimes.
