Over the last two decades, alternative investments — private equity, venture capital and real estate — have grown from $1T to nearly $16T in AUM.
Along with that growth has come enormous operational complexity for fund accounting teams: more strategies, more fund structures and far more intricate rules for calculating performance, fees and distributions.
For years, Excel has been the backbone of this work but as funds scale, its limitations become clear. Spreadsheets multiply, errors compound and firms risk institutional knowledge walking out the door with each departing employee.
As Battery General Partner Marcus Ryu shared with The Wall Street Journal, it is “a very unusual situation… where you have a huge industry doing something of very high stakes, but essentially without really high-quality enterprise software.”
That gap is exactly what @maybern_ set out to close. Founded by @rossmechanic and Ashwin Raghu, Maybern is reimagining how private market funds operate by replacing spreadsheets with a single, auditable system that automates, verifies and explains every calculation from start to finish.
In just 18 months, Maybern has become a trusted partner to some of the largest funds in the alternatives space. Were excited to lead the company’s $50M Series B and to support a team building the financial infrastructure private markets have long needed.

@joshephraim I have never seen management fees deducted from carry? Do you see this in venture? Sure management fees reduce the net cash going through the waterfall, but I’ve never seen them actually offset carry.
We are thrilled to announce our latest investment in @maybern_ alongside @PrimaryVC, @Camber_Creek, @humancapital, and more.
As private funds grow more complex, Maybern empowers the office of the modern fund CFO by unifying financial and operational fund data in a single platform.
Last week they emerged from stealth, and the most sophisticated real estate investment funds will soon run on @maybern_.

Excited to finally announce our investment in @maybern_ and partnership with @rossmechanic and Ashwin Raghu to build a true OS for the private markets...
@rhunterh It’s really targeted at fund accountants/fund admins. It does a good job of laying out the different complexities you might see across waterfalls and how best to model them in Excel. You could write a book 3 times as long if you really wanted to really dive into the details.
@Levijameshere@rhunterh@Levijameshere I’ve read all of it. We’ve got a copy in the office. It’s got good breadth (touches on a lot of the waterfall complexity that exists out there), but doesn’t go as deep on the details. Happy to chat through it.
