When Nelson Mandela was imprisoned on Robben Island, a tape of Ibrahim’s masterpiece "Mannenberg" was smuggled into the prison. Mandela famously said the track was proof that "freedom was alive and well in South Africa." Years later, upon his release, Mandela invited Ibrahim to play at his historic 1994 presidential inauguration.
