@robb862 @elladorn_ @mathewclarke Fair, but most apprenticeships are so low paid you can’t afford to live alone, and for rural folk they’re are too far from home to be able to stay with parents and save, so we lose again.
Plus, with such a dire job market atm grads are also competing for these apprentiships…

@PoliticsID @elladorn_ Can’t speak for everyone, but from where I’m from there are LITERALLY no jobs for 20 or so miles, let alone apprenticeships (I’d guess 30 miles or so), zero trains, zero buses, so this only works for suburban or semi-rural ppl really ://

@DibbsTux @elladorn_ So true! I work in archives/libraries & in the past these jobs would have been a safe haven for disabled/neurodiverse folk who found the job world too intense elsewhere…. Now you can’t even get in the door w/o a degree which is worse for everyone! Where are the grad jobs 😭

@elladorn_ This is so important; in an area with no buses, jobs, trains, rentals and no bloody driving instructors for 20+ miles, there is no other choice in my community than marry young, or go to university. City people have no idea this poverty of opportunity exists in the UK.

A thing I often think is missing from the uni discourse is that young people who aren't from a pretty wealthy (/academic/high cultural capital) background actually have no idea what jobs there are except the quite obvious ones
