Fasting for Autophagy? Eugenol from Hot Water Clove Bud Extract Induces and Amplifies Autophagic Action without the need for fasting, but can also be used to supercharge autophagy during fasting.

Clove buds contain the highest levels of eugenol of any known substance, and in all of the studies that have identified the anticancer properties of eugenol, every one of them reports that eugenol induces and amplifies autophagic activity in the human body.

For those of you who do not know what autophagy actually is, let me explain…

Every cell in your body accumulates waste over time, including damaged proteins, old mitochondria that are no longer optimally functional, and even invading pathogens. Autophagy recognizes this waste, wraps it in a special membrane bubble called an autophagosome, and then sends it to the cell's recycling center, the lysosomes. There, it is broken down into basic building blocks, such as amino acids, sugars, and fats, which the cell reuses to make new, healthy mitochondria and functional proteins, or to generate energy.

*Special note: In the presence of viral infections, eugenol halts autophagy to prevent viral and bacterial replication and to keep them from spreading. It doesn't mean eugenol shouldn't be taken during an infection; it's just a note to help you understand that it will not induce autophagy when the cells are infected.
