I just watched Hank Green's latest video about investing money. He's not a financial advisor and is not giving you advice... but he is demonstrating what it looks like to think critically with your own mind... which I am a fan of. It's an interesting exploration of the relationship between giant mega-companies, AI, small business, and how to invest your money.

I was fully locked in..... squinty eyed, thinking DEEPLY with Hank about possible over-valuation of giant companies and the potential overestimation, (or underestimation) of AI in general. I was listening to Hank and reflecting deeply and trying to decide what points I agreed with and which ones I was unsure of. I was using my own brain and thinking about what would be smart investments in the future.

In the middle of my deepest thought moment the video paused and I got jolted out of human-ness by an ad for a company (TradingView) blaring at me about how I need to use AI to do the stock trading thinking for me. The talking head was telling me that I just had to sit back, let AI think for me... and make money. In that moment, I felt like Odysseus tied to the mast of the ship listening to the siren-song of an AI moneygrab. "Just quit thinking" the siren sings. "Let it think for you" the clanker-seller says.

Another interesting component to this is that the ad was placed right at the deepest moment of the video.. which you can see in the engagement graph. This is when people are thinking most critically. It's like the AI sirens are strategically placed... by AI to disrupt actual human thought.

Then the words of Dylan Thomas came back to me. A poem an old person read to me when I was young. Something I didn't understand then.... but now it seems to apply to all of humanity.
"Rage, rage against the dying of the light".
