It’s incredible how bias clouds people’s judgment.

I’ve genuinely lost hundreds of followers these last weeks just for expressing my admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo.

One comment I always find bizarre is, “How can you be a Totti fan and a Ronaldo fan?” My answer is simple: “Cause I can?”

“But Totti chose loyalty over fame, glory and money, while Ronaldo is an arrogant egomaniac who thinks he’s the best!”

The same Totti who pretty much thinks only Maradona was better than him. The same Totti who wanted a director’s role at Roma despite never completing a single course. The same Totti who believed he could make a Serie A return at 48.

What an arrogant person this Totti guy is huh?

No, he is not.

I’m the person who spends the most time in the world consuming hours of Totti content every single day.

I’ve spent well into four figures acquiring full matches simply because I love watching him play and because I want to change the wider perception of just how good he really was.

I’m literally obsessed with Totti.

That doesn’t mean I have to pretend he was a flawless human being.

Just because I love Totti, the long hair, the low socks and the vintage football, doesn’t mean I can’t also admire Cristiano Ronaldo.

The idea that elite athletes don’t have enormous egos is one of the biggest misconceptions held by people who have never competed at a high level.

Every athlete who reaches that level believes they’re the best and you have to be that way in order to survive.

The inconsistency is what fascinates me.

Someone will say they prefer Messi over Ronaldo because Messi is a “humble boy just enjoying football” while Ronaldo is a “crying prima donna,” yet their favourite basketball player is Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant, two of the most ruthless, ego-driven competitors sport has ever seen (as well as being dicks to their own teammates).

Or the same person will say they prefer Messi to Ronaldo because he’s a purer footballer and better all around while also at the same time ignores the same logic he built his argument on and prefers Salah over Hazard because of Salah’s ruthless efficiency and numbers.

It’s perfectly fine to prefer one player over another for valid footballing reasons.

What I find strange is when personality arguments are applied selectively depending on who people already like.

Football fans are nothing but pretentious actors.

It's sad how hated he has become. Portugal before Cristiano was a team of perennial losers. Eusebio was the one closest to him in terms of greatness when it comes to the National team. We aren't going to see a more era defining player like him and Messi after this WC.
