On Feb 1, 1968, during the Tet Offensive, South Vietnam’s police chief Nguyen Ngoc Loan executed Vietcong fighter Nguyen Van Lem in Saigon. Captured by AP photographer Eddie Adams, the stark image shocked the world, winning a Pulitzer. Lem had just killed Loan’s friend and family, fueling the brutal act. After, Loan faced global scorn, his life began to unravel. He fled to the US in 1975, opening a pizza shop, but the photo haunted him until his death in '98. Adams later regretted its impact, saying it destroyed Loan.
