"We survived COVID, but we didn’t survive Rabies."

We’re deeply saddened to hear that Steve Benjamin from @animalocean, in Cape Town, is closing his seal snorkelling business following the confirmation of rabies as the cause behind the recent attacks on snorkelers by Cape Fur seals. We’ve had the pleasure of working with Steve on several projects including @lewispugh’s #CoralSwim in the Red Sea. Without a doubt, he is one of the most inspiring, lovely and talented people we’ve ever collaborated with.

In January 2022, Steve and his team observed Cape Fur seals at Duiker Island, on the West Coast of South Africa, exhibiting erratic behaviour and attacking snorkelers, resulting in serious injuries. The next season wasn't much better and the team's stress was mounting. Several guides were no longer willing to snorkel, and were overwhelmed with taking clients to doctors. The team felt that offering seal snorkelling had become hazardous, compromising the fun and excitement of the activity.

When rabies was confirmed, first in one case, then three, and eventually throughout a large part the entire seal population of about 2 million, it became evident that this would be an ongoing issue. This is the first outbreak of rabies to have been detected in a marine mammal population worldwide.

Steve and his team have dedicated 16 years to offering a unique ocean opportunity for people to connect with Cape Fur seals in their kelp forest habitats. But @animalocean’s work isn’t over. It will be shifting focus to new ventures, including ocean safaris, film support, the sardine migration, and other expeditions.
