Rumors are circulating that Zhang Yixing （Lay Zhang）has been softly banned for one year due to violating political discipline.

A marketing account (Li Ji) claims: Zhang Yixing’s punishment is no secret — all satellite TV stations and platforms have already received official notices. The specific penalty is “suspending approval for all offline performances for one year,” including galas, commercial shows, and variety programs. It’s unclear whether new films or TV dramas that haven’t started filming yet this year can still be approved.

The reason stems from a conflict and disagreement between Zhang Yixing and the National Theatre of China.

Zhang Yixing joined the National Theatre of China in 2023 through a talent recruitment program.

The marketing account states: From 2024 to 2025, he starred in the National Theatre’s major production <The Summoning of Dunhuang> This is not an ordinary commercial performance but a flagship project of the National Theatre, with top-tier production values and heavy coverage by all major state media. Because it was an official project with built-in diplomatic attributes — and because he is a National Theatre actor — it later enabled him to appear at international events such as the United Nations and China-Pakistan diplomatic activities. Fans who are now hyping his resources and invitations over the past few years owe a huge debt to the National Theatre’s backing.

On December 14, 2025, Zhang Yixing traveled to South Korea for an EXO fan meeting without reporting it to the National Theatre of China. After being urgently recalled, he lied and claimed he “returned to China to participate in National Theatre activities,” which triggered accusations of “dumping the blame on the unit.” This occurred especially during the sensitive period just before high-level South Korean officials were scheduled to visit China, leading to claims that he “violated political discipline.”

Li Ji said Zhang Yixing went to Korea secretly at a time when South Korean President Lee Jae-myung was about to visit China. The “Korea restriction order” was one of the bargaining chips in diplomatic negotiations, which is why he was urgently summoned back.

Immediately afterward, on December 31, Zhang Yixing once again performed in Hong Kong without prior approval. In January 2026, his conflict with the National Theatre escalated dramatically. Not only did Zhang Yixing refuse to admit fault, he also resigned abruptly, dumping the resulting public opinion pressure onto the National Theatre. As punishment, he received a “one-year suspension of approval for all offline performances” (including galas, commercial shows, and variety programs), though album releases remain unrestricted.

However, this claim has not been confirmed by any official documents.

Zhang Yixing Studio Response

The studio’s statement denies that Zhang Yixing is a “problematic artist” or “being banned,” emphasizing that he has committed no illegal acts. It claims the recent reduction in activities is solely due to recovery after nasal surgery (septum correction surgery in January 2026), and that work will resume normally in April–May. The studio gave no direct response to the “National Theatre dispute” or the “performance approval suspension.”

*In China, holding a position at the National Theatre of China is considered “within the system” — equivalent to being a government employee — and requires strict adherence to “political discipline.” Any overseas-related activities must be reported to superiors in advance. This applies even to top-tier celebrities.
