This piece in @ConversationEDU breaks down the findings of my recent article with @EckersleyRobyn in @Env_Pol: on what the nationalist populist rhetoric that has filled the public debate in recent weeks means for climate policy in Australia.

New article!
Nationalism, populism and climate scepticism in Australia: comparing radical and conservative, centre-right discourses by Robyn Eckersley & René Rejón.

It's not everyday that you publish in a journal with the fourth highest impact factor in political science. So, it's worth celebrating this paper, where Prof. Robyn Eckersley and I dissect the populism deployed by Australian centre-right parties. 🥳🪇🥂

In this @PolStudies paper, @SergioAbarcena and I
find that dark-skinned lawmakers in Mexico are prevented from producing important legislation at the same rate than their peers, partially because they are marginalised from leadership posts. Open Access in link below.
#ERSNew 🐣🔓 Ethnoracial legislative quotas promised to wedge doors open to historically marginalized groups, normalizing their (re)election. Have they? @RRejonP (@ArtsUnimelb) and Ewig (@HHHSchool) found that, in Colombia, the answer is no: https://t.co/tqMUa5nqqR
Racism takes different forms in different contexts; Anti-racism should tailor its prescriptions based on the characteristics of each "version" of this vile social phenomenon. Hopefully, this new publication will advance our comprehension of Mexican racism.

NEW PUB ALERT!

Extant research suggest that, in Mexico, light-skinned candidates have an electoral advantage. However, these studies failed to control for the best-known predictors of electoral success (i.e., education and experience).

They reveal the furtive and systemic nature of Mexican racism; that colorist disadvantages might be better explained by inequalities of origin, than by overt discrimination. The anti-racist strategies we design in response should be informed by these nuances.

To test the aptness of skin color classification algorithms (so popular these days!), I asked humans and "robots" to classify 1000s of pics, and compared their results. This @EthnicitiesSAGE paper presents the findings.
SPOILER: it’s good news for antiracist research!
New online: "Automated transcoloration? Skin tone classification algorithms and the prominence of non-epidermic features in the Mexican racial schema" by @RRejonP. Read it here: https://t.co/TIY8TgJwMB @TariqModood
Happy to share that my article with @UniMelb's Bina Fernandez and @LouOlliff on how/why diasporas in Australia engage in humanitarian responses is finally out.
Here's to the amazing (though often invisible) humanitarian work that diasporas make!

Never got to share this article, were @Sarahrcyb and I test the frequent assumption that co-design leads to policy success.
After we published this paper, she's was awarded with a DECRA from the @arc_gov_au. I tell myself our article had something to do with it 😂 (it didn't).
This article by @Sarahrcyb and René Rejón in @Journal_PDP looks at the impact of #Codesign processes using the case of ACT's Family Safety Hub and finds that it can have positive outcomes initially but its long-term success hinges on several factors. https://t.co/GE6OMKQ7o4
@aytchellesse No one finds the statement offensive. They find offensive what they assume you are actually thinking; arguably, that something is a “lie” bc it is a truth you cannot access (standpoint epistemology/requires lived exp). The offensive part is that you don’t take their word for it.
The Australian Institute of International Affairs @aiiansw asked me to comment on @Claudiashein victory. I hope this introductory piece is helpful for audiences unfamiliar with Mexican politics.
"#Mexico has elected its first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum. What does this mean for Mexico and its relationships with the United States and #Australia?"

I wrote a brief piece on the 2024 Mexican General Election; an introduction to the topic, written for the Australian audience.
Hope it's a helpful overview!
