If there's anything I can do to protect institutions from bad software initiatives that go 300-600% over budget and schedule and wreck their human capital, I want to do it. To that end, I sat for my first ever podcast interview (links in thread):
@anniierau "Unlike many other search engines, Google only produces results that match all of your search terms, either in the text of the page or in the link anchors pointing to the page. No more frustration with results that have nothing to do with your search terms."
Goodness...
@it_unprofession Having spent a good chunk of the last three days under my kitchen sink rebuilding plumbing and finish surfaces, a decent portion of this with a caulking gun in hand...I feel this π
@dieworkwear Among your shortlist, I also love Bigi, E. Marinella, and Tie Your Tie, though I've found Tie Your Tie's stuff to inscrutably be a little "loud" for my style and ultimately come out less than expected.
@bull_feath95552@DrBitcoinMD I sorta did this in 2018! (Chicago -> Rhode Island, before Rhode Island got expensive - my house was 1/3 its current value at that time). Can confirm, was big undertaking!
You may have noticed that the word for βnightβ in many languages appears to be that languageβs word for βeightβ with an βN' in front of it.
English: N + eight = Night
German: N + acht = Nacht
French: N + huit = Nuit
Spanish: N + ocho = Noche
Italian: N + otto = Notte
Portuguese: N + oito = Noite

@ElectricSheep_Z@WomanDefiner *I should qualify "nothing." In large part, with current human technology, the atoms themselves are irreplaceable. Need ultra-pure quartz starting from gutter dirt, there are ways. If the only global source of a rare earth element has embargoed you, that's a real problem.
@ElectricSheep_Z@WomanDefiner Yeah as a chemistry Ph.D., I was wincing a lot. Point well taken that materials work is very touchy and sometimes inscrutable (I have first hand experience), but with patience and determination, nothing, from high-purity quartz to elaborate crystal recipes, is irreplaceable.
@m_saharia Ditto for expensive machines like the shared transmission electron microscope. It was often booked solid (and billed dramatically higher fees) during business hours.
@m_saharia A wrinkle for experimentalists is that sometimes experiments happen on their own time. For example, I did a certain ~30h photochemical reaction probably a hundred times trying to get it to work properly.
